When you click on a link that says "enter your VIN and get a free carfax record check" that's all you are getting for free, Carfax will check to see if that car has a record, that's all. If you want to see the record, you have to pay $30. Don't be fooled. They just want your money.
I did, however, come across a webpage where you can get a general report that is actually free. it is a database type of site. http://www.autovinvent.com/. you may not find your vehicle on this site though. for the whole story, visit this.

If you are looking for an alternative and cheaper way to obtain Carfax reports, check out Vinaudit. All flood-damaged cars, total-loss damages, salvage, theft, lien, etc are included.
